Comanche© is a WCMS, a web content management server. In every day's practice you'll find that Comanche has the characteristics of a generic Word processor, but also incorporates typical HTML-editor stuff and some traces of a database program. That may take some time to adapt to. However, soon you'll notice this mix is invaluable when it comes to speed and accuracy. Comanche supports you in optimally utilizing precisely these qualities, which you'll need on a daily basis in your job as an editor.
All pages in Comanche are constructed of components, basically building blocks filled with content. If you open a page (or: 'item') in Comanche, it opens by default in the 'layout webpage' view. This view represents an overview of all visible components on the webpage of this item. Components are arranged on the page in a matrix: their exact
position within the matrix is determined by the RxCx (row and column) indication in the gray component top bar. For example: a component marked 'R1C1' will be located at the top left positioned cell of the matrix: first row, first column. You can manage them with the icons in the gray top bar. Components can be moved to an adjacent row or column with
the striped arrows. A single row can contain several components: the triangle arrows are used to move a component up or down within the same row. The 'look & feel' of all components are defined by templates in the database: all you have to do is edit the content and arrange the components.

Comanche is equipped with an easy to use, generic looking, userfriendly interface. The integrated What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get Story Editor looks (and acts!) remarkably similar to a standard Word processor, like Word or WordPerfect - and very unlike basically all alternative online editors. You'll know your way around within a few mouse clicks.
By clicking on the small pencil in the top bar of a component, you'll open it in the Story editor. If you click on the paragraph you want to edit, a dashed outline appears around the paragraph to indicate this is the 'active paragraph'. Take a close look at the button bars: they resemble a generic Word processor interface. You'll find familiar buttons and functions for almost all tasks, along with some less familiar for specific Comanche© functions. Each button has a mouse-over with a short

description: additional help can be found in the online 'Help' (accessible with F1 or the question mark in the button bar). Exactly which buttons are available, depends entirely on the Editor in Chief. He or she has full control over the button bar and the options available for each usergroup. If, for instance, a deviant

text alignment or effects like Bold or Italic are not acceptable, the Editor in Chief can simply disallow these functions by removing a mark in a tickbox. A Source Editor and Template Editor are available for the more experienced users: these tools will give them absolute control over the website.

Curious how your page will look online? Just select Preview Webpage (menu 'View > Preview Webpage' or quick key Alt-P) and Comanche will show you the page exactly as it will appear on the site, including navigation, banners etc. The page will not be available for other viewers, until you publish it. If you're allowed (according to your user rights) to approve and publish your page, the 'Publish' option will appear in the 'Page' menu. In this publication proces, all links will be verified, and all linked approved pages will be published along with this one. If you link to a non-approved page, Comanche will inform you so. Then it's up to you:
approve that particular page or, if you're not entitled to do so, ask someone who
is to do it for you, or remove the link to that page from your page.
